Joint Platform:
As members of the Charlottesville City Council, Dave Norris and Kristin Szakos will work to ensure that Charlottesville is a great place to live for all its residents, and that all have access to the opportunities it affords. Working with the community, schools, law enforcement and community services, they will focus on making sure all our children have the resources they need to grow into healthy, responsible citizens—safe places, a healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others. Within that framework they will provide the leadership in the following areas:
Civic Engagement- Increasing the voice of residents and stakeholders in the decisions of the Council, enhancing the effectiveness of neighborhood associations and respect at all levels of government for resident input.
Housing- Supporting the expansion of affordable housing to ensure a vibrant and diverse community.
Education- Promoting excellence in public education and community support for children and families.
Safety- Working with law enforcement so that our residents feel safe in their neighborhoods, and expanding bike paths and sidewalks so people can bicycle and walk safely throughout the city.
Environment- Promoting environmental sustainability in local and regional planning. Working toward an ecologically—and economically—responsible framework for addressing our long-term water, energy, and transportation needs.
Equality- Making Charlottesville a livable city for all by ensuring equal opportunity and closing racial disparities in our community.
As Sheriff of Charlottesville, James E. Brown III will focus on:
Safety- Ensure the safety of the court rooms, the safe transfer of inmates, and the timely processing of civil papers.
Youth Programs- Creating positive activities for our youth to keep them on the right path.
Education- Working with educators, young people and the community to address the drop-out rate of our students because getting an education is key to preventing crime.
Diversity- Promoting diversity and community participation in the Charlottesville leadership.
